Belarus, Poland Carry Out Prisoner Exchange After Negotiations

(MENAFN) Belarus and Poland carried out a five-for-five prisoner exchange on Tuesday following what officials described as lengthy and complex negotiations, according to a Belarusian state media.

A news agency reported, citing the country’s security services, that the exchange was the result of months of talks between Belarus’ State Security Committee and Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency, which began last September.

The swap took place at the Bialowieza-Pyerarova border crossing and involved five individuals convicted of espionage-related charges in Belarus and Russia.

According to the report, those released included citizens of Belarus, Russia, and other Commonwealth of Independent States countries, who were returned to their home states. It also stated that all individuals received basic medical care and essential support after the exchange.

Officials said intelligence services and representatives from seven different countries were involved in facilitating the operation.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed on social media platform X that Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut was among those released. He wrote: “Andrzej Poczobut is free! Welcome to your Polish home, my friend,” alongside a photo with the journalist.

Separately, U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale said he and his team played a role in securing the release of three Polish citizens and two Moldovan nationals as part of the broader exchange.
